The Federal Polytechnic Bauchi was shut down indefinitely after a violent student protest triggered by an armed robbery attack on the school’s male hostel. The robbery occurred around 3:39 a.m. on Monday, with assailants armed with machetes and firearms stealing valuables, including smartphones and laptops, and injuring at least two students.

The Students’ Union Government President, Haruna Umar, condemned the attack, describing it as unprecedented in the school’s history. Students expressed frustration over the institution’s alleged failure to provide adequate security

The protest turned violent after suspected hoodlums hijacked the peaceful demonstration, invading hostels and carting away belongings. The Bauchi State Police Command deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd after protesters blocked the Bauchi-Dass federal highway near the polytechnic’s main gate. The police arrested 36 male and 12 female persons for alleged involvement in the protest and three suspected members of the gang responsible for the robbery.

The polytechnic’s management ordered the immediate closure of academic activities, giving students two hours to vacate the campus until further notice. The registrar stated that the management had acted immediately to address the situation, but the presence of hoodlums necessitated the closure.
