BREAKING: Youth group demands release of Bauchi Polytechnic Students arrested during protest

The Youth Arise Movement (YAM) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of 48 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, arrested during a protest over armed robbery attacks on campus. The group described the arrests as an abuse of power and a disproportionate response to the students’ legitimate demands.

According to YAM’s convener, Babatunde Ademola, the students were exercising their democratic right to speak out against the menace of armed robbery on their campus. “Instead of responding with concern and concrete solutions, the police chose to meet these legitimate demands with force, arresting 48 students and attempting to silence their cry for safety,” Ademola said.

He added that the students’ actions were peaceful, organised, and lawful, and that the decision to respond with force and arrest was not only disproportionate but also an abuse of power. “The silencing of youth voices will not be tolerated. Students are not criminals. They are citizens demanding accountability, dignity, and a better future,” Ademola emphasised.

YAM is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the students, the dropping of all charges against them, and a thorough investigation into the armed robbery incidents on campus. The group also wants the government to address the alleged inaction of security agencies in tackling the menace.
