According to Karl Toriola, the CEO of MTN Nigeria, the telecom company has submitted a proposal for a 100% service pricing hike to the Nigerian Communications Commission.
He revealed this in a Thursday interview with Arise TV.
However, the CEO indicated that it remains questionable whether the Nigerian Communications Commission, the telecom regulator, will approve the request owing to existing economic hardship in the country.
“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 percent tariff increases to regulators.
“I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country,” Toriola said.
This occurs as there is increased conjecture that Nigerian cellular service rates would increase later this year.
In the absence of a tariff increase, Gbenga Adebayo, the chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), recently threatened to shut down operations.
However, telecom subscribers opposed any proposal to increase costs.
