The Trump administration has launched an investigation into imported furniture, with President Donald Trump announcing that the probe will be completed within 50 days and tariffs imposed on furniture imports from other countries. “Within the next 50 days, that investigation will be completed, and furniture coming from other countries into the United States will be tariffed at a rate yet to be determined,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. He added, “This will bring the furniture business back to North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and states all across the Union.”

The potential tariffs have sparked a mixed reaction in the furniture industry. Shares of major furniture retailers like Wayfair, RH, and Williams-Sonoma plummeted in after-hours trading, as new tariffs could drive up costs for these brands. However, La-Z-Boy, which manufactures most of its furniture in the US, saw its shares rise on the news.

Trump’s tariff plans come at a challenging time for the US furniture industry, which faces declining demand and increased competition from imports. The US imported $25.5 billion worth of furniture in 2024, with about 60% coming from Vietnam and China. The industry has also seen a significant decline in employment, from 1.2 million in 1979 to 340,000 today.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which allows for tariffs on goods deemed critical to national security. The American Home Furnishings Alliance, a trade group representing domestic furniture manufacturers and importers, has expressed opposition to new tariffs, arguing that they would harm manufacturing in the US and drive up consumer prices.
