The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has revealed that it spends a substantial N200 million monthly to power its operations across its three campuses. Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam, made this known during a press briefing to mark the university’s 54th convocation ceremony.

“We are rigorously implementing energy-saving measures across all campuses, optimising our energy consumption patterns, and promoting energy-efficient practices among staff and students,” Ujam said, adding that the university is exploring alternative energy solutions, including solar and hybrid systems.

The university recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rural Electrification Agency for the provision of 10 megawatts of electricity. “These initiatives are not merely about cost reduction; they are about ensuring a stable and uninterrupted power supply, which is fundamental to supporting our academic, research, and administrative functions,” Ujam emphasised.

The convocation ceremony will feature the awarding of various degrees to over 7,000 students, with 167 making first class and 616 to be decorated with doctorate degrees
