Kemi Badenoch, the former British Business Secretary, has been appointed the Conservative Party’s new leader.

It comes after she defeated Robert Jenrick in the last round of voting.

Raised in Nigeria, Badenoch is currently the first Black woman to hold a prominent position in a UK political party.

With 53,806 votes to Jenrick’s 41,388 votes, the 44-year-old succeeds Rishi Sunak as the opposition’s leader.

On Saturday morning, the party announced the outcome.

In order to create a new policy platform, Badenoch pledged throughout her campaign to bring the Conservatives back to “first principles” and begin a number of reviews in the upcoming months.
