The British pound has surged to its highest level in almost four years, trading at $1.3736, a gain of over 0.5% against the US dollar. According to analysts, the pound’s upward trajectory is largely attributed to the weakness of the US dollar rather than sterling’s strength.

“The relative strength of the pound has been more of a weak US dollar story this year,” said Janet Mui, head of market analysis at RBC Brewin Dolphin. Paul Jackson, global head of asset allocation research at Invesco, agreed, noting that sterling’s depreciation against the euro suggests that dollar weakness is driving the trend.

Jackson expects the pound to continue its recovery journey, forecasting GBPUSD to reach 1.40 and GBPEUR to hit 1.15 in 12 months. In contrast, Brian Mangwiro, an investment manager at Barings, took a bearish view, predicting EURGBP to reach 0.875 and GBPUSD to drop to 1.30 in six months.

The pound’s future prospects remain uncertain, with analysts divided on the potential for further upside. While some see opportunities for growth, others caution that softer UK economic momentum and potential rate cuts by the Bank of England may limit the pound’s upside.
