Buhari: Northwest Govs declare Tuesday public holiday

In observance of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a UK hospital on Sunday, the Northwest Governors Forum has proclaimed Tuesday a public holiday in all seven of the region’s states.

In a statement, Katsina State Governor and Forum Chairman Dikko Radda expressed deep sorrow at the elder statesman’s passing, calling it a “colossal loss to Nigeria.”

“The Northwest Governors Forum receives with shock and deep sorrow the news of the passing of our beloved former President, General Muhammadu Buhari, who breathed his last yesterday at a hospital in the United Kingdom,” the statement read.

He emphasized that the former president’s life was characterized by selfless dedication, unflinching integrity, and patriotic sacrifice, and he called Buhari a father, a leader, and the pride of the Northwest.

As a sign of respect, the Forum unanimously decided to make Tuesday a public holiday in the states of Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Zamfara so that people may pay their respects.

“This gesture reflects the deep reverence we hold for a man who dedicated his entire life to serving Nigeria and humanity,” Radda said.

The statement added that, in accordance with Islamic customs, burial prayers and internment are set for 2:00 pm on Tuesday, while the late president’s remains would be transported by air to his homeland of Katsina by noon.

The Forum called on Nigerians from all walks of life to join together in mourning and offer prayers for Buhari’s soul to rest in peace.
