Ladan Salihu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is Nigeria’s main democratic issue.
Salihu made this claim on Tuesday while answering questions on the Arise Television program “The Morning Brief.”
He asserts that Nigerians have been shown beyond a reasonable doubt that INEC is not prepared for change.
The ADC chieftain went on to say that the events of last Saturday’s bye-election were similar to those of 2023 and that, should the same people and the same faulty system continue to exist, they will probably recur in 2027.
“What we are saying is not about even this last Saturday’s bye-election. We are saying that the democratic environment that we have today is on a downward spiral, and that INEC is complicit. INEC is partly and almost entirely responsible, because it is the umpire.
“And we always hear this kind of narrative that is so undignifying, that is so condescending that when you lose, you can go to the court. Which court? In which democracy? In which country? in this Nigeria of today?
“It is now left for Nigerians to do a surgical analysis of what they expect to have as a free and fair election going forward. But with this contraption, I am not convinced that we have transparency upon ourselves,” he said.
