The Global Affairs Canada Initiative has committed 15 million Canadian dollars (approximately $10.7 million US dollars) to addressing malnutrition among women, adolescents, and children in Kebbi, Bauchi, and Kaduna states. The funding aims to strengthen gender-responsive sexual reproductive health rights and nutrition services in the states, with UNICEF providing technical support and the state governments implementing the program through primary health centres.

According to Michael Juma, UNICEF Chief Field Officer, Sokoto, the objective is to enable target beneficiaries to access quality healthcare and nutrition services, with a focus on women, adolescent girls, and children. “We want Universal Health Coverage all pervading whereby no single child is left behind,” Juma said, acknowledging the efforts of Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris in improving healthcare delivery.

The program, which will run for five years, was explained by facilitator and Canadian Health Manager, Martin Dohlsten. “The financing is 15 million Canadian dollars, equivalent to $10.7 US dollars for maternal health and the newborn for the three states,” Dohlsten added.

Kebbi State Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, thanked the Canadian Government for its intervention, highlighting Governor Idris’s commitment to improving the health sector. “Governor Nasir Idris has placed a premium on the improvement of the health sector, in addition to the sizeable budgetary allocation to health services,” Isma’il said

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Shehu KoKo, also affirmed the administration’s commitment to healthcare, stating that priority has been attached to primary health and human resource development. “The incumbent administration of Nasir Idris has revitalised several primary health centres, and before December this year, 191 more PHCs will also undergo rehabilitation,” KoKo assured.

The two-day training workshop for health practitioners and journalists is expected to improve the implementation capacity of health workers in Kebbi State.
