The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Taraba State has appointed Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Awoshiri as its new chairman.

The organization described his election as a step toward renewed dedication to fostering Christian unity, promoting interfaith harmony, and championing social justice throughout the state.

The leadership vote, held Thursday evening in Jalingo, was overseen by representatives from CAN’s national body. The delegation was led by Rev. (Dr.) Mrs. Uzoaku Williams, who represented the National President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.

In his acceptance remarks, Awoshiri who serves as a Catholic priest and scholar reiterated his allegiance to the association’s foundational motto, “That they all may be one” (John 17:21).

He emphasized that his tenure would prioritize uniting Christians and encouraging interreligious collaboration, which he described as key components for achieving lasting peace and sustainable development.

“There can be no peace without unity, and no development without justice,” Awoshiri stated. “My administration will engage like-minded individuals from all faiths to foster peace, uphold justice, and spur meaningful progress in Taraba.”

He also highlighted the value of inclusive leadership, vowing to close both denominational and interfaith gaps. “Our diversity should be our strength, not our division,” he said, urging Christians to work together to effectively spread the gospel and draw more people to Christ.
