The Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) has launched an initiative aimed at equipping incarcerated individuals with in-demand vocational skills to promote financial independence and ease their reintegration into society. The initiative, titled “Project Empower to Rebuild”, is part of CELSIR’s broader commitment to rehabilitation through economic empowerment.

At the inauguration, CELSIR Executive Director Joke Aladesanmi described the project as a strategic intervention to address the barriers faced by justice-impacted persons in Nigeria. “For genuine rehabilitation to occur, economic empowerment must be part of the conversation,” she emphasised.

Aladesanmi highlighted the challenges faced by inmates upon release, saying, “Many inmates leave correctional facilities without skills, support, or a means of livelihood. They often return to communities that reject them, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and recidivism. Project E2R addresses this gap by empowering them with practical skills they can use while still incarcerated.”

The programme has commenced at the Female Custodial Facility in Kirikiri, Lagos, where participants are undergoing training in gypsum art, scented candles, and diffusers production. Aladesanmi noted, “This project is not only about skill acquisition. It’s about transformation—helping individuals return to society not as liabilities but as professionals ready to contribute meaningfully.

She added that the initiative is a “practical and forward-thinking response to some of the root causes of reoffending in Nigeria”. By providing inmates with vocational skills, CELSIR aims to reduce recidivism and promote successful reintegration into the society
