Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that the club has submitted a special appeal to UEFA regarding their Champions League fixtures.
Speaking on Friday, Laporta addressed the ongoing delays with the reopening of the Camp Nou stadium. He stated that the club has formally requested permission to play their first Champions League match of the season away from home.
This request comes as UEFA regulations prohibit clubs from hosting matches at more than one venue during the competition. That rule poses a challenge for Barcelona, who may not be able to stage all four of their league-phase matches at Camp Nou as originally hoped.
Although the Catalan club had targeted a return to their home ground by the end of 2024, those plans were postponed. They were optimistic about hosting the Joan Gamper Trophy match on August 10 after receiving the green light to update their construction and activity licenses.
However, the final occupancy permit from the local authorities has yet to be granted. As a result, Barcelona decided to relocate the Joan Gamper fixture against Como to the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Laporta said: “What we’ve asked UEFA is to allow us to play the first game away from home. The draw is on August 28, and we’ll see then. I hope UEFA allows us to play away.”
