The Chinese Foreign Ministry has criticized U.S. Vice President JD Vance, labeling him as “ignorant and impolite” following his remarks about the U.S. borrowing money from “Chinese peasants.”

Vance made the comment amid rising tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and China over tariffs. Trump had previously threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Chinese goods in retaliation for Beijing’s 34% tariff on U.S. exports.

In response, China warned that the U.S. could not use threats to pressure Beijing into submission.

On Monday, President Trump gave China an ultimatum: remove its 34% counter-tariff by Tuesday or face an additional 50% tax on Chinese goods exported to the U.S.

If Trump follows through on his threat, U.S. companies could face a combined 104% tariff on exports to China, as this new 50% tariff would be added to the existing 20% tariffs imposed in March and the 34% tariffs announced last week.

Defending the U.S. tariffs on Fox News, Vice President Vance remarked, “We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.”

In a press briefing on Tuesday, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded, saying, “It is surprising and sad to hear such ignorant and impolite words from this vice president.”

China emphasized that it would “fight to the end” and described Trump’s actions as “bullying.”

“China’s position on China-U.S. economic and trade relations has been made very clear,” Lin stated.
