Pope Leo XIV receives US VP Vance, Secretary of State Rubio

Pope Leo XIV welcomed U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Vatican on Monday, just one day after his inaugural mass.

According to Vance’s spokesperson, the private audience with the pope lasted 45 minutes.

Following the meeting with the pontiff, Vance also held discussions with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s top diplomat for international affairs. The Holy See described the encounter as friendly and constructive.

“Satisfaction at the good bilateral relations was reiterated, and the collaboration between Church and State was discussed, as well as some matters of special relevance to ecclesial life and religious freedom.

“Finally, there was an exchange of views on some current international issues, calling for respect for humanitarian law and international law in areas of conflict and for a negotiated solution between the parties involved”, the Vatican said in a statement.

Vance, who embraced Catholicism in 2019, and Rubio, a lifelong Catholic, were among an estimated 200,000 attendees including dignitaries, royalty, and members of the public who assembled in St. Peter’s Square to witness the official beginning of Pope Leo’s tenure.

Prior to his election, Pope Leo had shared posts on his personal X account that criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and included sharp remarks about Vance himself.

Despite this history, Vance said on Sunday that the United States was “very proud of him”. (Quoted text preserved.)

“Certainly our prayers go with him as he starts this very important work,” Vance said at a meeting with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
