China vows to retaliate against US as Trump makes strong decision

On Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Commerce vowed to retaliate against the new U.S. import tariffs set to take effect later in the day.

The ministry reiterated its position that the Trump administration was attempting to shift blame and pressure Beijing over the issue of fentanyl trafficking.

The additional 10% tariff that U.S. President Donald Trump threatened last week is scheduled to be implemented at 0501 GMT on March 4, bringing the total tariff to 20%. This move comes in response to what the White House claims is China’s failure to address drug flows.

The new tariff is an increase on existing levies already applied to thousands of Chinese products.

The U.S. has accused China of supplying chemicals used in fentanyl production, but China has denied these allegations.

Reports surfaced on Monday indicating that China plans to target U.S. agricultural and food products in retaliation, implementing both tariff and non-tariff measures.

“China has repeatedly stated that the U.S.’ unilateral tariffs violate World Trade Organization rules and undermine the multilateral trade system.

“Such measures will not solve the US problems but instead will harm China-US economic and trade cooperation and disrupt regular international trade,” the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

China has urged the U.S. to immediately remove these unjust and baseless tariffs that cause harm to others.
