Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the general elections of 2023, has emphasized the importance of the church returning positive values to society in order to improve Nigeria.

In a post on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Obi said, Nigeria is facing concerning levels of moral deterioration, increased rascality, shrinking sense of responsibility, and worthlessness.

He bemoaned the fact that shortcuts are encouraged, dishonesty is rewarded, and integrity is neglected, claiming that the country’s problems do not stem from a lack of knowledge but rather from the breakdown of its ideals.

As the moral compass of society, the former governor of Anambra State stated that the Church must take the lead in the critical work of rebuilding values through intentional and practical efforts of youth mentorship, skills training, sustainable community projects, and constant participation.

“Upon my return from overseas yesterday, I attended the Fourth Enugu Diocesan Synod, where I spoke on “The Role of the Church in Youth Empowerment and Community Development.” I emphasised that the Church needs to move from pulpit to people by taking a more practical role in rebuilding societal values, empowering our youths, and strengthening community structures. Our nation cannot progress when moral decay and a declining sense of responsibility continue to spread unchecked.

“In today’s society, shortcuts are celebrated, dishonesty is rewarded, and integrity is sidelined. Even among the highly educated, including professors, the erosion of ethical standards is increasingly evident.

“If we are to build a nation where integrity is rewarded and responsibility is cherished, the Church and other serious religious groups must take the lead in shaping ethical behaviour and strengthening societal character.

By moving from the pulpit to the people, the Church can inspire a new generation and play a decisive role in Nigeria’s values, morals, and social renewal,” he tweeted.

In order to assist young people find discipline, hard work, and the realization that character, not corruption, is the actual foundation for progress, he continued, the Church might turn religion into possibilities that enhance communities.
