The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has called on the government to provide funding to convert existing petrol stations to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refilling centres. According to IPMAN’s National President, Abubakar Maigandi, the conversion process requires extensive capital, structural modifications, and regulatory approvals.

“Installing a CNG facility isn’t plug-and-play. It involves structural changes, regulatory compliance, and funding. Without government support, most marketers won’t be able to make the switch,” Maigandi said. He noted that independent marketers are well-positioned to drive the transition to CNG, but need financing and technical support from the government.

The call for support comes as the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative reports significant progress in promoting alternative fuel. Over 100,000 vehicles have been converted from petrol to CNG in one year, with over $1bn invested in the sector. “The President’s vision was clear: reduce the pressure on citizens by leveraging domestic energy sources like natural gas to create a more sustainable, cost-effective transportation system,” said Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director and Chief Executive of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative.

The initiative has seen a significant increase in CNG adoption, with 60 operational CNG refuelling stations and 175 more under development. Oluwagbemi also addressed safety concerns, stating that CNG is “18 times less explosive than petrol and eight times less than diesel.”

As the initiative moves forward, IPMAN’s call for government funding highlights the need for support to facilitate the transition to CNG. With the potential to reduce transportation costs and improve household income, the success of the CNG initiative could have a significant impact on Nigeria’s economy
