Members of the Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria staged a protest in Abuja on Wednesday over the federal government’s failure to pay for completed contracts.
The demonstrators blocked access to the Ministry of Finance during official working hours, preventing staff from entering the building or their offices.
Even the Finance Minister and his convoy were denied entry through the main gate upon their arrival.
Carrying placards, the protesters voiced their frustrations over delayed payments and what they described as the government’s neglect. Some of the signs read: “you cannot grow the economy by starving its builders” and “National Assembly is folding their arms watching Nigerian contractors suffer injustice.”
Though the minister eventually accessed his office through a different entrance, the protesters refused to be addressed by the ministry’s permanent secretary. They insisted on speaking directly with the minister.
The contractors are demanding immediate settlement of outstanding payments for government projects completed as far back as 2024.
