Correctional officer, five others nabbed for N109.5m gold theft in Kebbi

Six suspects have been taken into custody by the Kebbi State Police Command in connection with the theft of gold ornaments worth over N109.5 million in Ka’oje town, which is located in the state’s Bagudo Local Government Area.

In a statement released on Wednesday, police spokesperson SP Nafiu Abubakar revealed that the arrests came after a complaint was filed at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Birnin Kebbi, on September 4, 2025.

Investigations, he said, showed that between 2024 and 2025, unidentified individuals broke into the home of one Hajiya Rabi of Ka’oje and took away four rings, nine bangles, and five gold necklaces totaling 782.7 grams. Her daughter, Hajiya Amina Hassan Bello, and other family members owned the objects.

Ibrahim Abubakar, a Nigerian Correctional Service officer, was taken into custody by detectives after confessing to the crime, according to Abubakar. He allegedly sold the stolen goods to four buyers: Nasiru Sani of Birnin Kebbi; Tasi’u Umar of Zauro town, Birnin Kebbi; and Sa’adu Ibrahim Darhami and Hamza Ahmad, both from Sokoto State.

He stated that Ibrahim Usman Oroji, who helped dispose of several valuables and got his part of N2.5 million, helped the officer. Mustapha Hassan, another accomplice, is accused of helping to hide the money by arranging the purchase of two land parcels in the city of Birnin Kebbi.

“Exhibits so far recovered include two golden bangles, a Haojue motorcycle, an iPhone 16, a Samsung Galaxy Ultra, and a Samsung Flip phone,” the spokesperson stated.

He said that more stolen property was being recovered and that other accomplices were being apprehended.
