Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has directed the immediate halt of all operations at the Mararrabar Birnin Yauri gold mining site in Ngaski Local Government Area after a violent confrontation resulted in one fatality.

During an unplanned visit to the location on Thursday, the governor instructed security forces to maintain full control of the area until a permanent resolution is achieved between the local communities and the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Initiative (PAGMI).

He raised concerns about Kebbi communities being excluded from the mining activities despite owning the land, and cautioned against the presence of foreigners from Mali, Tanzania, Chad, and Niger within the state.

Additionally, Idris tasked the Ministry of Mining with creating a comprehensive list of all licensed miners and companies operating in Kebbi to promote regulation within the sector.

The governor also authorized the release of around 50 youths who had been detained over mining-related conflicts, encouraging them to commit to peace and open dialogue.
