Court admits videos showing Nnamdi Kanu ‘creating’ Eastern Security Network

On Wednesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja accepted into evidence a collection of video recordings featuring Nnamdi Kanu, the Biafran separatist leader, in which he announced the establishment of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

In the footage, which was played in open court, Kanu, head of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was seen making remarks deemed inflammatory, which served as a basis for terrorism charges brought against him.

One of the clips, labeled “Broadcast by Nnamdi Kanu,” showed him speaking to his supporters and referring to the region as “The Blessed Land of Biafra.”

During the broadcast, he formally introduced the ESN and urged his audience to protect their land against what he called “Fulani domination.”

He cautioned local political figures against aligning with external interests and gave a firm order barring Fulani herders from entering the area, stating: “No Fulani parading as herdsmen shall be allowed in our land.”
“If you are an agent of the Fulani, turn your way this evening.”

The Nigerian government, through a witness identified as PWBBB, alleged that Kanu’s broadcasts led to violent incidents classified as terrorist activities throughout the Southeast.

This witness was presented by the lead prosecutor, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN. While giving testimony, he introduced a flash drive containing several of Kanu’s alleged actions before his arrest, accusing him of instigating violence and terrorism.

Despite strong opposition from Kanu’s legal team, the court admitted the flash drive and its accompanying certificate of compliance as Exhibits PWA and PW1.

Earlier in the court session, a letter dated June 17, 2021, from former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), was also admitted into evidence. The letter accused Kanu of terrorism, incitement to violence, and murder. It was addressed to the DSS and accepted by the court without any objections, being marked as Exhibit PWF.

Referring to the contents of the letter, the prosecution witness claimed that after Kanu’s broadcasts, a wave of coordinated attacks targeted police departments and correctional institutions, resulting in multiple casualties and destruction of infrastructure.

He further quoted the petition, stating that Kanu had directed his followers to “bring down” security personnel and seize their weapons.

Additionally, a statement allegedly made by Kanu on July 17, 2021, while in custody was submitted to the court. In it, Kanu reportedly refused to provide more written responses, maintaining that he had already addressed the allegations against him.
