During the October edition of the state’s monthly cleanup effort, 108 people were arrested on Saturday for trafficking and loitering in various locations of Umuahia and taken before the Abia State Mobile Environmental Court.
The Abia State Ministry of Environment sent a task group to capture them.
Ten of the 108 defaulters were released by the court for testifying as students, two were released because of health issues, and 96 others were found guilty and penalized by the mobile court, which was presided over by Magistrate Chinenye Ibekwe.
After observing the exercise, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, the Abia State Commissioner for Environment, stated that one of Governor Alex Otti’s principal tactics for shielding Abia citizens from illness outbreaks is keeping the environment clean.
He also revealed that the state government has sent out sanitary inspectors to visit houses and businesses to make sure they are kept pollution-free.
Ogbonna said that the Nigerian Army’s participation in the civic activities that cleaned up the Isi Gate axis of Umuahia gave the town a more dazzling appearance.
The commissioner also revealed intentions to set up a mobile court at Umuahia North’s Orie Ugba Market to prosecute dishonest vendors who break the fundamental environmental laws of Abia State there.
