Court takes drastic decision on Stepfather who murdered 22-month-old son

Christopher Stockton, a stepfather who murdered his partner’s 22-month-old son, Charlie, has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 25 years.

On January 12, 2024, Stockton was left alone with Charlie for barely 20 minutes while the toddler’s mother, Paula Roberts, went for an eye test.

Their trial at Teesside Crown Court today revealed that Roberts was so concerned about Stockton that she installed a surveillance camera over her son’s cot in their Darlington house.

According to Sky News, Roberts subsequently pleaded guilty to maltreatment after neglecting to seek Charlie medical treatment for bruising inflicted by Stockton over several weeks.

The 41-year-old lady was eventually imprisoned for four years.

In sentencing, Justice James Goss stated that Charlie had trouble speaking and was particularly vulnerable.

He added that only Stockton, who later attempted to claim that Charlie choked to death on a Hobnob, knew why he delivered the deadly blow, which resulted in brain injuries identical to those observed in a vehicle accident.

The judge told Stockton: “You have robbed his family of the joy of bringing up a child and of sharing life events with him.

“No court can undo the harm you have caused.”

Meanwhile, Charlie died in the hospital the next day from a severe head injury inflicted on him by Stockton.
