The recent spike in defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has drawn criticism from Solomon Dalung, the former minister of youth and sports, who attributes the trend to political self-preservation rather than sincere concern for the general welfare.
Dalung responded to the recent high-profile defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the dissolution of the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure into the APC during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.
Dalung strongly disagreed, characterizing the action as a calculated escape route for beleaguered politicians, while Governor Oborevwori defended it as being in Delta State’s best interests.
“The wave of defections—or rather, the gale of repositioning by political elites—is more about survival, protection, and evasion of prosecution,” Dalung stated.
He said that people, not politicians, should decide if a defection is acceptable or justified, emphasizing that such decisions should ultimately be left to the electorate.
“Serious observers of Nigerian politics know this has nothing to do with ideology or service.”
