Rivers: Political tension rises after overnight attack on ADC member’s residence

The family residence of an African Democratic Congress, ADC, member, Isaiah Thomas, in Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, has been attacked and reportedly set ablaze.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, less than a day after the official commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Speaking to journalists, Thomas’ mother, Uchechi Thomas, alleged that the attackers stormed the compound in large numbers while armed with guns before setting several structures within the premises on fire.

She added that various household belongings were also destroyed during the attack.

According to her, the assailants appeared to have been looking for her son after he hosted a meeting involving ADC members at the family residence on Tuesday.

She said “the identities of those behind the attack are not known.”

The incident has generated concern in the community, coming shortly after political campaigns officially commenced ahead of the elections.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, condemned the attack.

Wobodo said he promptly directed his Chief Security Officer to visit the community and assess the situation after receiving information about the incident.

He assured residents that the local government would collaborate with relevant security agencies to identify those responsible and ensure that they are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and establish the events that led to the incident.
