It is considered disgraceful behavior for politicians to continue defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the nation’s ruling party, due to financial incentives.

The Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party in Cross River State, Dr Ofem Lekam Ujong made this claim after the party denied a social media post by a man named Chief Paul Ifere, who claimed that over the weekend, all of the LP’s structures in the state defected to the APC together with Daniel Asuquo, a former party senatorial candidate.

A few PDP, PRP, and LP dignitaries who defected to the APC during the month were honored by the ruling party yesterday. Among them was Daniel Asuquo, a three-term member of the House of Representatives who ran for senate in 2023 on the Labour Party’s platform.

“To set the record straight, on 7 April 2025, Rt Hon Daniel Asuquo, a.k.a Dansuki, tendered his resignation letter to our state chairman, Patriarch Ogar Osim, citing the state publicity Secretary for the records. These were duly acknowledged.

“We want to enlighten that none of the 18 chapter chairman and state executive of our party defected with Asuquo or any other decamped in the state.

“We challenge Ifere Paul to provide any name of LP officials that defected yesterday or before now. We’re very committed to a better Nigeria.”

Ujong said in a statement that the party’s state and chapter executives are not swayed by the “monetary form of politics, which is almost becoming a tradition for opposition members in Nigeria,” and that they are steadfastly loyal to the LP.

Ujong continued by saying that Nigerians are suffering and living in poverty as a result of the ruling party’s destruction of the country’s economy.

“Such an inducement is not an option for LP chapter or state executive committee members.
