Democracy Day: APC, PDP chairmen move strongly for single 6-year term

Barristers Alphonsu Eba and Venatius Ikem, the state chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, respectively, have joined the call for a six-year term for Nigeria’s president and state governors.

They emphasized in separate but exclusive interviews with ZINGTIE on Thursday in honor of Democracy Day that this will make governing simple and peaceful.

Both stated that it was now essential for the authorities to examine the alternative as soon as possible.

Alphonsus Eba, the chairman of the state ruling party, stated, “I totally agree with the popular call for a single tenure of six years because it puts less pressure on the President and Governor with all the associated strain of re-election which is often cumbersome.”

According to PDP chairman Venatius Ikem, there is no question that the need for a one-term plan for the executive arm of government has increased.

Ikem noted that the calls have existed since the previous Constitutional Conferences, including the Political Reform Conference in 2006, of which he was a member.

“One wonders why the reform recommendation is still on the shelves,” he said.

Ikem claimed that the animosity toward a second term had been eliminated after the one-term option was tried with vice chancellors in Nigerian colleges.
