It was reported that Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, briefed members of the upper house of parliament on the outcomes of security agency efforts to reduce national insecurity.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, requested the NSA briefing after the chamber resolved last week to call a meeting between the security chiefs and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.
In his remarks, Akpabio lamented the recent wave of insecurity in Abuja and across states.
He stated that the Senate was resolved to step in and stop the insecurity.
Speaking one-on-one with Nuhu Ribadu, the NSA, Minister of Interior Tunji Ojo, Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru, his Finance counterparts, and service leaders insisted that security agents’ actions prevented any significant terrorist assault since President Bola Tinubu took office in May of last year.
A lawmaker who spoke on condition of anonymity told ZINGTIE: “The NSA told us that about 20 gun-running networks were demobilised, while over 5,000 military-grade weapons were seized and destroyed by government agencies.”
Ribadu stated that he hopes that abduction and banditry will soon come to an end, but he claims that pressure from security personnel has led to an increase in economic crimes in recent times.
The lawmaker cited Ribadu as saying that the country’s oil output had significantly increased in the South-South and that the South-East region had experienced relative peace.
“The Chief of Air Staff also gave an excellent account of how the air component of the war complements the work of troops on ground.
“He mentioned how they killed two key leaders of bandits, Ali Kachalla and Yellow Janburos, and how that has helped to halt the interstate movement of bandits and logistics, especially around Kaduna, Niger, and Zamfara States,” the lawmaker said.
He claimed that the Inspector General of Police also discussed apprehending criminals in the Abuja suburbs and how his officers have thwarted the schemes of lone thieves operating in the nation’s capital.
While most MPs expressed satisfaction with their contributions, others called attention to operational shortcomings and asked the military chiefs to maintain unity and cooperation to achieve the best possible outcome.
It was instructed to the Minister of Finance to release money as soon as they were due.
