In response to a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Rockefeller Foundation have pledged financial support for disaster relief efforts. The Global Fund awarded $5 million in emergency grants to support urgent health needs, prioritising the continuation of diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, HIV, and malaria, as well as restoring disrupted health care services and disease prevention efforts.

The Rockefeller Foundation announced a $200,000 emergency grant to Plan International Myanmar to provide critical relief to affected children and families. The funds will establish child-friendly spaces offering meals, mental health support, and emergency education for displaced children, focusing on girls and young women

Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands said, “The scale of devastation in Myanmar is truly staggering, with the impact on already vulnerable communities being nothing short of catastrophic. This crisis goes far beyond the destruction of buildings and infrastructure; it puts lives at risk through disrupted health care, the threat of disease outbreaks and the severe shortage of essential medicines.”

The earthquake resulted in over 3,000 deaths and 4,500 injuries, severely damaging critical infrastructure, including health facilities. The initiative will also rehabilitate schools, train teachers in trauma-informed care, and distribute learning kits in the coming months
