Medical consultants and doctors at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO) in Benue State have commenced an indefinite strike in protest over the non-payment of salary arrears spanning eight months. The industrial action has brought activities at the university’s teaching hospital to a complete halt.
Sources within the facility attributed the ongoing crisis to alleged years of poor leadership, pointing fingers at previous administrators such as former Vice Chancellor, Professor Innocent Ujah, and former Chief Medical Director, Professor Silas Ochejile.
Both former officials, who hail from the Idoma ethnic group, are accused of several misconducts, including financial irregularities, inflated project costs, and employment-related corruption.
“This university has been in shambles from the very foundation. And ironically, it is our own people, Idoma professors who are destroying it,” said a concerned staff member who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“From Professor Ujah’s alleged lacklustre and corrupt leadership to Professor Silas Ochejile’s tenure marked by job racketeering, inflated contracts, and unpaid salaries, the rot runs deep.”
Staff also alleged that under Ochejile’s leadership, the hospital faced severe shortages of basic medical resources, with the pharmacy reportedly unable to provide even essential medications like paracetamol.
In addition, it was claimed that doctors had to work in poorly equipped environments, lacking even basic office furniture, despite the institution receiving considerable annual funding running into billions of naira.
Although a new Chief Medical Director, Professor Teddy Agida, has taken over, internal sources say he is currently grappling with the depth of issues left behind by his predecessors.
“He met an empty treasury and is struggling to find funds to settle outstanding debts and begin much-needed renovations,” said another hospital staffer.
