At Ogbabo Junction on the Itobe Anyigba Road in Kogi State, heavily armed men ambushed a commercial bus on Friday and took nine people hostage.

According to information our correspondent obtained, the car’s driver and six other passengers barely avoided the assault.

Around 4:20 p.m., the event happened in the Ofu Local Government Area, close to Ogbabo Junction. When the ambush-laying militants spotted the Peace Mass Transit passenger-loaded Toyota bus, they rushed the motorway.

To frighten the passengers, they halted the bus and fired intermittently into the air. The driver, Mr. Sunday Okechi, outwitted the assailants, though, and he and the other six passengers ran into the woods.

Nine others were not so lucky, as the attackers marched them into the forest. The kidnapping took place on the Ogbabo–Ochadamu Road, within 300 meters from a military post.

When security personnel eventually reached the site, they discovered the abandoned bus—registered ENZ-55 XS—next to a blue Toyota Carina “E.”

Since then, a search and rescue effort has been initiated by a combined team of security authorities, which includes local hunters and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.

SP Williams Ovye Aya, a spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, confirmed the event and stated that attempts were being made to liberate the victims and capture the criminals.

“Yes, we are in touch with our men. The Command is making efforts in collaboration with the military, vigilantes and hunters to rescue the victims and arrest the criminals,” he stated.
