Duke University has announced gifts totaling $10 million from the Duke Endowment to support interdisciplinary PhD training and launch an initiative aimed at fostering free inquiry and constructive discourse.

The gifts include $8 million to develop three Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Collaboratives (IGEC), which will provide doctoral students with opportunities for collaborative research, mentoring, and professional development. The funding will also support the research and teaching of top-tier faculty to lead IGEC interdisciplinary programs and foster a culture of collaboration across the university.

“This award affirms our commitment to cultivating creative, adaptive scholars,” said Ed Balleisen, vice provost for interdisciplinary studies and principal investigator for the IGEC grant. “By investing in interdisciplinary graduate education, we are strengthening Duke’s position as a global leader in innovative research and scholarship.”

In addition, a gift of $2 million will launch the Provost’s Initiative on Pluralism, Free Inquiry, and Belonging. This initiative aims to help students conduct constructive conversations across diverse perspectives and support faculty in developing new courses, research, and speaker series.

“The ability to engage with differing perspectives is essential to a vibrant academic community that can cultivate the next generation of leaders for our world,” said Alec D. Gallimore, Duke provost and chief academic officer. “In the United States alone today, polls show decreasing interest in understanding and seeing others as fellow citizens. This new initiative is a commitment to fostering an environment where meaningful dialogue and mutual respect can thrive.
