University of Arizona Receives $2 Million for Consciousness Studies

The University of Arizona has received a $2 million gift from Eugene Jhong, a retired Google software developer, to establish an endowed chair in consciousness studies. This gift is part of the university’s $3 billion Fuel Wonder fundraising campaign and will fund the Thomas G. Bever and Stuart R. Hameroff Chair in Consciousness Studies in the College of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

The chair will be held by Thomas G. Bever, director of the undergraduate consciousness studies minor and the Language and Cognition Lab. Bever expressed his gratitude for the gift, saying, “I am grateful to have the chance to build on what we have achieved in the consciousness minor programme so far and to enrich the experience of our undergraduates. The university historically has had unique strength in interdisciplinary opportunities for graduate students, and I am committed to showing how a new interdisciplinary programme in consciousness can be organised to excite all undergraduates to think creatively and synthetically.

The consciousness minor was established in 2023 with support from a previous gift from Jhong. To date, six students have completed the program, with six more set to graduate this spring. The gift will help further develop the program and provide new opportunities for undergraduate students.

The endowed chair honors not only Bever but also Stuart R. Hameroff, professor emeritus in the departments of anesthesiology and psychology, co-founder of the university’s Center for Consciousness Studies, and research professor at the Arizona Space Institute
