The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has surpassed 3,000, with hundreds more still missing.

As forecasts predict unusual rainfall, rescue teams face additional challenges in reaching survivors in a nation already torn apart by civil conflict.

Reports indicate that last Friday’s 7.7-magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest the Southeast Asian nation has experienced in a century, struck a region home to 28 million people. The quake caused widespread destruction, collapsing buildings, leveling entire communities, and leaving many without food, water, and shelter.

Myanmar’s embassy in Japan shared an update on Facebook on Wednesday, confirming that the death count had risen to 3,003, with 4,515 people injured and 351 unaccounted for. Rescue efforts continue as search teams strive to find more survivors.

However, the relief operation could face even more difficulties as weather experts warned of unseasonal rain from Sunday through April 11, which may further hinder efforts in the hardest-hit regions, including Mandalay, Sagaing, and Naypyidaw, the country’s capital.

One aid worker in Myanmar expressed concern, saying, “Rain is coming, and there are still many trapped. In Mandalay, if the rain begins, it could drown those who have survived until now, even if they’re still buried.”

The embassy also reported that 53 aid flights have been sent to Myanmar, with over 1,900 rescue personnel arriving from 15 countries, including neighbors in Southeast Asia, as well as China, India, and Russia.

Despite the widespread devastation, Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, is scheduled to depart for a regional summit in Bangkok on Thursday. This rare foreign visit is seen as unusual for a general who is considered a pariah by many countries, subject to Western sanctions, and under investigation by the International Criminal Court.
