The ongoing detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, according to VANGUARD, is an indication of profound injustice, according to Archbishop Raphael Opoko, who also clarified that Kanu’s campaign for Biafra should not be interpreted as rebellion but rather as a demand for justice and equal rights for the Igbo people.
The Archbishop said Kanu’s message was straightforward: a referendum should be permitted if Nigeria is unable to provide the Igbo with equal access and opportunity.
He cited instances in school when South-East kids with good test scores are turned away but others with significantly lower marks are admitted and go on to hold influential positions, arguing that this is a peaceful demand rather than a crime.
People would push back if they are pushed to the limit for too long, according to Archbishop Opoko, who also noted that such unfair treatment breeds resentment and irritation.
Concerns regarding the responses of young Igbo people to these injustices were also brought up by him.
He claimed that they are keeping an eye on how their people are handled and would eventually take decisive action of their own.
“Why should someone from the Southeast score 230 in JAMB and still not get admission, while someone from elsewhere scores below 100 and gets in? Then the same person with 100 becomes head of ministries and parastatals. When you oppress people, they become resilient,” he said.
