Ebonyi: Man, 42, cuts cousin’s throat for demanding felling tree branches

In the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, a 42-year-old man named Mr. Nkwuda Chukwudi Vincent, a native of Ndiogbu in the Ndieze autonomous community, is accused of chopping off his cousin Mr. Nkwuda Chukwuka’s throat for requesting some branches off a fallen tree on the family farm.

According to ZINGTIE, the suspect, Mr. Nkwuda Vincent, an assistant catechist at St. Samuel Station, Ndiogbu, in the Ndieze autonomous community, cut down a tree on their property’s boundary on Monday.

Speaking to ZINGTIE on Tuesday from his hospital bed at Sudan Missionary Hospital in Iboko, the victim, Mr. Chukwuka, claimed that trouble started when he discovered his cousin, Mr. Vincent, felling branches from a tree on their property.

He clarified that, according to the suspect, the victim’s father gave them the order to cut down the tree so it could be used as stakes for their yams.

Narrating his ordeal, the victim said, “It was on the weekend that I went to our land where I found my cousin cutting sticks from a particular tree, and since the tree was on our land, I asked him who authorized the cutting.

“Mr Vincent claimed it was my father’s directive, but when I asked for an equal share of the sticks, he became aggressive, leading to an exchange of words.

“When it became clear that he was about to attack me with a cutlass, I used a log of wood to defend myself, but to my surprise, he struck my throat with the cutlass. It’s by the grace of God that I survived.”

The victim, who expressed shock at his cousin’s disruptive attitude, urged family members and the community’s leaders to look into the situation and make sure the perpetrator is punished to ensure justice is done.

“I’m grateful to be alive to tell the story, and I believe both of us belong to the community and family, who should ensure that justice is done in this matter and the perpetrator is punished to deter anyone from such aberrant behavior in the future.”

Verifying the facts, Mr. Nkwuda Jude Ginika, a family member, called the occurrence horrifying and mentioned that they are currently providing treatment to the victim to make sure he heals from his wounds.

Mr. Jude elucidated the family’s position, declaring that the Iboko Divisional police had gathered incident reports and reported the incident to the security agency. He restated that the perpetrator would face consequences in line with the community’s traditions.

As of the time this report was filed, the accused person’s phone number was switched off; therefore, attempts to contact him have been ineffective.

PPRO DSP Joshua Ukandu, the police public relations officer, said ZINGTIE that the event had yet to be reported to the command when he was approached.
