The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has emphasized that the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the organization must not result in hardship for ordinary citizens in those nations or elsewhere in the region.

Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, made this point while addressing attendees at the first ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament for 2025, currently taking place in Abuja.

He reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to regional unity, despite ongoing political divisions.

“In line with the decisions of the heads of state and government, we held an emergency meeting in April to create a negotiation framework for this exit; however, we must ensure that the people of our region do not suffer the consequences,” he said.

Touray explained that the ECOWAS Council of Ministers convened in Accra, Ghana, to outline a roadmap for dialogue with the three Sahel nations. According to him, formal negotiations are scheduled to commence within the week.

His comments come as ECOWAS commemorates its 50th anniversary, a milestone Touray described as an opportunity to reflect on the organization’s journey and future direction.

“This Golden Jubilee is not just a celebration. It is a moment of reflection on how far we’ve come and what direction we want to take as a community,” he added.

He further revealed that a summit focused on the future of the region will be held before the year ends, following broad consultations with stakeholders across West Africa.

Touray also urged lawmakers to begin discussions around artificial intelligence, cautioning that unregulated use of the technology could pose serious risks to the region’s youth.

The parliamentary session in Abuja is set to continue until May 31.
