Ekweremadu: David’s family gives update on their son

The family of David Ukpo, who was flown to the UK for a kidney transplant by former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has expressed their distress at not having seen or heard from their son since the incident.

On March 23, 2023, the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, United Kingdom, condemned the former deputy senate president and his wife, Beatrice, for organ trafficking. Ekweremadu received a sentence of nine years and eight months in jail, while his wife received a term of four years and six months.

Ekweremadu, his spouse Beatrice, and intermediary physician Obinna Obeta were charged with attempting to convince medical professionals at London’s Royal Free Hospital to perform an £80,000 transplant on 21-year-old David Ukpo, who was depicted as the cousin of their daughter, Sonia Ekweremadu.

According to information obtained by Ireporteronline, David Ukpo’s family in Ndioffia Ishieke village, Ebonyi State, said they haven’t spoken to him since the incident occurred and don’t know if he is still alive or not.

Speaking to the Vanguard at the family property in Ndioffia Ishieke village, Ebonyi State, Mary Ukpo, 46, the mother of David Ukpo, disclosed that she has not heard from or seen her son since November 2021, when he paid a visit to the community.

She said, “I don’t know if my son is alive or not because I have not heard from him since 2022.

“The last time I saw him was in 2021 when he came to the village. I am begging anyone who knows where my son is to please grant me access to speak to him.

“We heard Ike Ekweremadu has been sentenced to prison, but until this very moment, we have not heard from our son. It’s been years now, and I don’t know if he is alive or dead. David is my son and first child. I just gave birth to another child in his absence, which makes it seven younger ones that are next to him.”

Ukpo Felicia, David’s stepmother, described with tears in her eyes how his father had been ill ever since he left, suffering from a swollen leg.

David is his mother’s first child, and according to their custom, the first wife is supposed to look after him.

She expressed her genuine concern for David’s welfare, adding that since he departed for Lagos, he had been providing money for their maintenance, but they have not heard from him.
