Electricity tariff hike: NLC to block DISCOs, NERC offices on Monday

On Monday, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are expected to picket the offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

According to NLC, its members will picket all of Nigeria’s power distribution corporations, or DISCOs.

The directive was issued after the Central Working Committee’s (CWC) April 30, 2024, meeting.

“The nationwide picketing is scheduled for Monday, May 13, 2024,” according to a statement signed by NLC Acting Secretary-General Chris Uyot.

Organized labour sent a protest letter to NERC headquarters on May 12, 2024, threatening to take massive action if NERC did not reverse the electricity pricing hike.

The unions called for a reversal, citing the hard condition that NERC action will force the masses into.

They said that in addition to disregarding legal procedure, the announced pricing hike violates the rights of Nigerian citizens.
