The Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum has urged President Bola Tinubu to lift the state of emergency declared in Rivers State.
This appeal comes after the recent peace accord between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the forum described the political unrest that engulfed the state in recent months as a troubling chapter that deeply affected the spirit of the state and “cast an undeserved shadow on our collective image, unity, progress, and prosperity.”
While expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for stepping in to address the conflict, the group commended both Fubara and Wike for what they termed a “show of maturity and courage” in choosing the path of reconciliation.
“This was exactly what we, the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum, had earnestly sought from the very beginning.
“Unfortunately, our initial efforts were not heeded, which necessitated our formal appeal to Mr President,” the forum said.
Alabo Toby, who serves as the acting chairman, explained that their involvement stemmed from a sincere desire to preserve the integrity and well-being of Rivers State.
Although the specific details of the peace agreement have not yet been disclosed, the forum voiced optimism that it aligns with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and adheres to lawful procedures.
They also called for the immediate restoration of all suspended democratic institutions and encouraged the people of Rivers State to embrace this period of calm as a fresh opportunity for unity and collective progress.
