Kidnapped Bayelsa judge released, reveals what happened

Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court, who had been abducted, has been released after spending 12 days in the hands of his captors.

Reports indicate that the judge was taken on the evening of Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Kilimanjaro Eatery, located opposite Ekeki Park, shortly after returning from a trip to Warri in Delta State.

Although he regained his freedom on Thursday, specific details regarding the circumstances of his release remain unclear as of the time this report was compiled. Neither security agencies nor the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have provided official updates.

Prior to his release, the Yenagoa Branch of the NBA had revealed that security operatives were making headway in tracing the perpetrators using “digital footprints.”

During the period of captivity, no communication was reportedly received from the abductors.

Justice Omukoro was allegedly seized by masked men at the eatery in Yenagoa, close to a police station. Some bystanders initially assumed the incident was part of a law enforcement operation.

In reaction to the abduction, the NBA announced a boycott of court activities throughout Bayelsa State. The association condemned the incident as a direct assault on the judicial system, voiced serious concerns about the safety of judicial personnel, and called for urgent action from the authorities.
