In order to honour the victims of the rallies in October 2020, protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate and recounted their experience being attacked by security personnel.

According to ZINGTIE, when the demonstrators gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate, they encountered fierce police opposition.

At the Lekki Toll Gate, protesters commemorated the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS demonstrations against extrajudicial murders and police brutality.

They claim that during Sunday’s mourning walk, the police officers brutalised them.

According to ZINGTIE, a small group of demonstrators had assembled at the Lekki Toll Gate to pay tribute to the people who died during the statewide demonstration in October 2020.

“We are protesters who wanted to mark the anniversary of #EndSARS but were apprehended by a group of policemen under the leadership of the commissioner of police,” one of the protesters said in a video posted on X by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong.

“I am right here speaking to you from a Black Maria, brutalized and beaten by the police. My glasses were taken away from my eyes by a police officer without any provocation.

“We are asking today when it became illegal to protest in this country.”

According to ZINGTIE, the protesters were taken into custody by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) on Sunday.

On Sunday, October 20, 2024, the demonstrators were taken into custody at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State and imprisoned in a Black Maria.
