Gov Alia announces security summit to tackle insecurity in Benue

Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has revealed plans to host a comprehensive state security summit as part of his government’s strategy to address the ongoing insecurity affecting various parts of the state.

During an engagement held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Government House in Makurdi, the governor shared the update while meeting with an advisory delegation sent by the Chief of Defence Staff to review the region’s security situation.

He noted that Benue has been facing a rise in violent incidents, with certain local government areas being the hardest hit.

“Benue has experienced increased attacks in recent times, and these are largely concentrated in specific local governments.

“The most affected areas include Kwande, Ukum, Katsina-Ala, Logo, and Gwer West,” he said.

Although insecurity is a widespread concern across the country, Governor Alia pointed out that the hardship endured by residents of Benue, particularly those in these areas, has been severe.

He mentioned that the state government has already held strategic discussions with the Office of the National Security Adviser and formed a joint task team that includes both government representatives and private sector partners to coordinate the upcoming summit.

“We currently have a dedicated team working with both the state and private sector to put together a Benue Security Summit,” Alia explained.

“Our goal is to start with that, and I’m also in discussions with fellow governors in the North Central zone to organize a broader North Central Security Summit,” he added.

In addition, the governor shared that efforts have been made to strengthen the Civil Protection Guards to support federal security forces in tackling the violence and ongoing displacement of people in the state.

He took the opportunity to thank General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, for his continued support in restoring peace to Benue and encouraged the advisory group to expand their review to nearby states like Taraba and Nasarawa, where similar issues persist.

“This marks a significant step forward for our state,” he concluded.
