Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued an apology to Jeremy Doku, acknowledging that he has been unfair to the player.
Guardiola has frequently left Doku on the bench in recent matches, with the Belgian international only being brought on as a substitute in the past three games.
Doku made an impact when he came on against Everton last weekend, with the score still tied at 0-0. He played a key role in City’s 2-0 victory.
Since the international break in March, Guardiola has favored a tactical approach that prioritizes defensive solidity and midfielders adept at maintaining possession.
This tactical shift has affected the playing time of both Doku and Savinho.
“I’ve been so unfair with him in the last games, because I remember the games against Spurs away and Brighton, for example,” Guardiola said about Doku specifically.
“Without him it would not be possible, but the only reason that they have not played lately is because we didn’t attack in the last games, with wingers – we were more full-backs wide, and more players in the middle like Bournemouth.
“But it’s only my reason. I feel sorry for him and for other ones.”
