Moses Paul (also known as DrMo), the African Democratic Congress’ (ADC) chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the 2026 elections, has warned Nigerians against selling their votes, claiming that the practice is undermining democracy and jeopardizing the country’s future.

Dr. Paul characterized Nigeria’s democracy as “bleeding” in a statement regarding the August 16, 2025, by-election, complaining that moneybags had taken over politics and that thuggery is being rewarded rather than punished.

Paul said, quoting Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate: “Nobody buys your vote or shoots his way into office and then goes to work for you.”

He emphasized that voters who trade their votes for cash are involved in the plunder of the national coffers, comparing vote-selling to armed robbery.

“Every time you sell your vote, you deny your children quality education, you deny your families hospitals that can save lives, you deny your communities water and basic amenities,” he said. “This is the true cost of vote-selling.”

Vote-trading culture is like “firing bullets at the future of society” and “driving nails into the coffin of good governance,” the ADC candidate cautioned. He maintained that democracy can only flourish on the basis of the people’s conscience and not on the basis of wealth and violence.

Paul acknowledged the difficulties but said he was hopeful that Nigerian democracy might still be restored if people voted wisely and refused to be influenced.

“Hope is not lost. Democracy does not belong to money or violence; it belongs to the people,” he declared. “If we stand firm, refuse to sell our future, and vote with conscience, we can restore dignity to our people.”

Paul, who plans to run for AMAC chairman in 2026, asked Nigerians to view their ballots as tools for change rather than as exchangeable goods.
