Ex-Liverpool star regrets leaving Arne Slot’s side

Netherlands defender Sepp van den Berg has expressed regret over leaving Liverpool and has shared his desire to return to Anfield one day.

Van den Berg, who requested to leave Liverpool in search of regular playing time, joined Brentford in August but now wishes he could come back.

The 23-year-old revealed that he had informed the club of his decision to depart before pre-season training began under new head coach Arne Slot. Despite joining Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in 2021, he struggled to establish himself in the first team. He was loaned out to Preston North End, Schalke, and Mainz to gain experience before making a permanent move to Brentford.

At Brentford, Van den Berg has become a key player, featuring in 20 Premier League matches. However, he is currently sidelined with a minor knee injury he sustained during Brentford’s 1-0 win over West Ham earlier this month.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, Van den Berg shared, “Before pre-season started, I had already told the club that I wanted to leave and play regular minutes. I would be lying if I said I did not dream of returning to Liverpool one day.

“That is still on my mind. But for now, it was better for my career to take a different path and play consistently,” he said via Sports Bible.
