After knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup, Southampton took a playful jab at the Gunners on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Saints achieved victory against Mikel Arteta’s team with a score of 2-1 at St Mary’s Stadium.
In the first half, Ross Stewart caught everyone off guard by giving the Championship team the lead. He took advantage of Ben White’s error in assessing the ball’s path, which caused him to miss a cross.
In the 35th minute, the Southampton player had sufficient time to receive the ball on his chest and then place it into the net past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Shortly after his substitution, Viktor Gyökeres leveled the score for the Gunners, keeping up his impressive form.
The Swede came on in the 60th minute and scored the equalizer eight minutes later.
The leaders of the Premier League kept looking for a winning goal, but it was Shea Charles who clinched an extraordinary win for Southampton with a goal in the 85th minute.
On X, an Arsenal fan voiced their displeasure regarding the result, branding it a ‘fluke win’ for the Saints.
The Southampton account quickly replied, saying, “Enjoy your quadruple, pal.”
After losing to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final last month, this defeat marked Arsenal’s second consecutive loss.
Nonetheless, Arteta held back from justifying the defeats, stating:
“No, and I don’t want to put any excuses about the players that are missing or the players that are here with issues. It’s not the case – let’s look at ourselves in the mirror, accept the situation, and go to Portugal with clarity and look forward to it.” (via club website)
The Gunners are still contenders for the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League.
