President Bola Tinubu allegedly prevented a U.S. deportation flight from arriving in Nigeria, according to several Facebook posts. This is not supported by any evidence.

A U.S. deportation flight has been prevented from landing in Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu. Facebook posts that are making the rounds in Nigeria claim as much.

In a public group with more than 124,500 members, one such post was shared. It reads : “Breaking News: Tinubu Blocks U.S. Deportation Flight from Landing in Nigeria Over Lack of Timely Notice – “Take Them Back,” He Declares. U.S. Deportation Plane Stuck in Air for 23 Hours, Waiting for Landing License as Tinubu Refuses Approval, Vows to Deny Entry.”

Donald Trump has taken a harsh stance against unauthorized immigrants and signed hundreds of executive orders since taking office as the 47th president of the United States.

More than 8,000 migrants have been detained by US Immigration and Custom Enforcement, or ICE, according to media sources. More than 4,700 individuals have been sent to Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Colombia.

Of the 1.45 million non-US nationals on ICE’s docket, at least 3,690 Nigerians are facing deportation.

When Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused deportation planes, the repatriation of hundreds of Colombians sparked a diplomatic dispute between the United States and Colombia.

After Trump threatened harsher sanctions and put a 25% tariff on Colombian exports, Petro eventually agreed to the flights.

Has Tinubu prevented the landing of a US deportation flight in Nigeria in a similar manner? We looked.

No evidence of the claim

Petro’s initial refusal to approve the expulsion of Colombians on US military jets and the aftermath were widely reported by worldwide media . It is doubtful that that same action by Tinubu would go unrecorded.

Thus, it was concerning that Africa Check could not locate any reliable media stories about Tinubu preventing a US deportation flight from touching down in Nigeria.
