The Federal Government has launched the “Fibre 2 Hostel Initiative” at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, to provide high-speed fibre-optic internet directly to student hostels. The initiative aims to enable reliable access to digital learning resources, online research tools, and virtual collaboration platforms.
Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Enterprise, Dr. Bosun Tijani, while flagging off the project, said, “The project is part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to enhance digital connectivity, promote smart campus infrastructure, bridge the digital divide, and foster innovation through enhanced broadband penetration in educational institutions across the country.”
Dr. Tijani emphasised the transformative potential of digital infrastructure in higher education, stating that the Fibre-2-Hostel Initiative will “revolutionise how students learn, innovate, and communicate.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, expressed gratitude to the Ministry and stakeholders for selecting UNILAG as the pioneer site for the rollout. She said, “The initiative aligns with the University Management’s vision and ongoing efforts to fully digitalise UNILAG and transform the campus into an environment where students and staff can thrive.”
The initiative will be implemented in phases, with four major halls of residence forming the first phase. The project is a collaborative effort between the Federal Government, private broadband providers, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)
